What is a # and how do I get one!-

UPDATE!!!!!! While I was semi-webstalking one of our favorite photographers (Amalie with Amalie Orrange Photography) I found a great post she did on a #Hashtag shortcut that will – I promise – make your hashtaging life ten times easier!

Ready…set….here it is Amalies Amazing #Hashtag Hack!

If you are like me and are still trying to grasp the notion of what a hashtag is (if you were to ask me a year ago it my answer would have been the number sign on a keypad…my how things have changed!) this may help! According to Google a hashtag is: a noun that is (on social media sites such as Twitter) a word or phrase preceded by a hash or pound (#) and used to identify messages on a specific topic. For example, we have had posts on our blog that reference the Throwback Thursday movement and will have #TBT…go ahead and click on that…if you were brave enough to do that you are set! All it does is link you to Twitter where all the posts with the same # are kept, a nice, neat grouping of all things #TBT! The same thing works for Instagram and Facebook, pretty neat right!

So why do you need to know this and what does this have to do with weddings…

Sometimes I wish I could put my head in the sand and pretend that all of the social media and technology was the same as when I was in school but times have changed and its time to embrace it and take advantage of it! Especially when it can be a big timesaver with weddings, and who doesn’t want that! Picture this (pun intended!) you invite 150 of your closest tech savvy friends and family to your beautiful wedding at Up the Creek Farms (hey, imagine that!) and each one of those 150 f&f have a smart phone with picture taking capabilities. Chances are that at some point during the wedding at least 75% of them will whip out that phone and snap a photo. Before the invention of the # those pictures were probably doomed to a life of neglect and solitude on the photo takers phone never to see the light of day again. Now with a few quick swipes and taps that picture can be added to a # of your choice that is specific to your wedding on Instagram or Facebook (Twitter is not lost here, if you include the # on your wedding website guests can keep track of any updates to your wedding) and WHAM all the pictures taken by f&f have a place to live happily together. The best part is that you will be able to see them, have them and share them! If you already knew how that works, sorry to take you through it but for those of us still reminiscing back on our beepers it was a must!

How do I get my own wedding #?

Wedding Wire has made a fool proof and pretty fun feature that helps you create your own wedding #. If you are creative and witty you can probably manage this on your own, but not all of us share that talent so this will come in handy!  The Wedding Hashtag Generator has you input some basic information on your wedding, then mixes it all up and gives you a bunch of options to choose from.

In the name of research I did play around with it and got some great ones…If this was a “thing” when I got married we would surely have used this one –

If you don’t like the first option they give you click the refresh arrows and it will keep giving you new ones to choose from –

But we really would have gone with this one…Screen Shot 2015-07-01 at 7.35.53 AM

If you are still not sure how the # thing works check out  #itsswayzetime on Instagram  and that should help clear it up!

How do you let your guests know about the #

I am a tad biased but one great option is to rent one of the Crystal & Crates chalkboards. All you need to do is write in your # and display it for your guests! You could also include it on your wedding website or on your program.
